Coimbra holds a vast and unique heritage wealth, over more than two millennia. It was the birthplace of Romans, Arabs and Kings. Coimbra was chosen by D. Afonso Henriques, in 1131, to be the Capital of the Portucalense County. Here we have the pleasure of transporting ourselves back in time to a Roman city, which is now a museum, thanks to its sculptures and paintings over the centuries. We invite you to let yourself be rocked by Fado de Coimbra and by the serenades of our students. For these reasons, the city of Coimbra is considered, nowadays, a multicultural center.
On this visit we share centuries of history of an ancient city. On the banks of the Mondego River, Coimbra is known for its University, the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe, which over time has shaped its image, making it the city of students. This is part of UNESCO, which included it in the World Heritage list, in a classification that also includes Rua da Sofia, Alta and the Machado de Castro National Museum. In recent years, the city has become one of the region's top tourist and cultural destinations. Come and meet Coimbra with us!
The existing Sephardic Jewish heritage in Portugal left deep and decisive marks for the development of the country over time. In recent years, the city of Coimbra has experienced very important moments in the field of Jewish heritage. Here, they were protected by the Portuguese monarchs, who, despite professing a different religion, the Jews enjoyed freedom of worship and instruction. Nowadays we can see and enjoy some spaces that still exist and that have many Jewish characteristics and influences. Come meet them with us!
It is in the natural landscape that the ancient city of Coimbra stands out with its parks and gardens. These, have a historical and scientific value that blends with people's lives. They invite you to moments of contemplation ennobling the history and heritage of the city. Many of them transport us to a romantic scenario, such as that of D. Pedro and Inês de Castro - a true story with a tragic ending. Coimbra is contemplated, day and night, along the banks of the Mondego river, thus giving it a touch of magic.
